The subject of Wieland and Shaftesbury was first introduced to me by my former teacher, Professor Guido C. L. Riemer at Bucknell College. My decision to write a dissertation on this topic solidified after I completed a seminar paper on Shaftesbury's influence on German thought in the 18th century, guided by Professor Calvin Thomas at Columbia University.
