The subject of Wieland and Shaftesbury was first introduced to me by my former teacher, Professor Guido C. L. Riemer at Bucknell College. My decision to write a dissertation on this topic solidified after I completed a seminar paper on Shaftesbury's influence on German thought in the 18th century, guided by Professor Calvin Thomas at Columbia University. I am profoundly grateful to Professor Thomas for his encouragement, assistance, and exceptional training in German scholarship. My appreciation also extends to Professor Riemer, whose guidance and inspiration have been invaluable throughout my academic journey. Additionally, I wish to express my sincere gratitude to Professor John A. Walz of Harvard for his unwavering interest in my work.
