What are we to do with this knowledge? What will we never discover about them? How much knowledge is necessary to reasonably discuss them? Often it is the effect of a figure ? in theology and church, as in art and literature ? that brings them to life, even if historical knowledge is thin. Men write about female figures, women write about male figures, trying to fathom what is special about these and whether meeting them today would be worth while.
