En savoir plus sur le livre

A feudal estate on the Normandy coast at the beginning of the 19th century: 17-year-old Jeanne, fresh from the convent school, yearns for romantic love and is thrilled when the attractive Julien de Lamare chooses her as his wife. However, the wedding night brings a shock for naïve Jeanne. During their honeymoon in Corsica, she begins to come to terms with her marital duties but soon realizes that she has married a miserly man. These disappointments continue, revealing the limitations of her life. In his 1883 debut novel, Maupassant captures the plight of wealthy women and the inadequacy of an entire social class. His frank portrayal of female psychology and sexuality feels remarkably modern, leading to the novel being banned from bookstores and causing a stir in Parliament at the time. The story presents a vivid narrative, realistic characters, and a poignant sense of life's injustices, particularly for women, marking it as one of the great literary fates of the 19th century.
