Demographic and human development in the Middle East and North Africa

En savoir plus sur le livre

This book examines demographic developments in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA), regions often described as having “peculiar” and “unique” demographic trends. Notably, fertility rates in these areas have not declined as sharply with development as seen in Western countries. The growing population, particularly among the youth, raises concerns in Europe, sparking discussions about “the death of the West.” Consequently, there is a pressing need to analyze the recent demographic trends in MENA. Despite the significance of these developments, literature on the subject is scarce, prompting the compilation of essential descriptive findings. The book evaluates the current state and recent demographic changes in the 22 Arab League countries (Algeria, Bahrain, Comoros, Djibouti, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Kuwait, Lebanon, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, UAE, Yemen) and three neighboring countries (Israel, Turkey, Iran). It presents comparable and recent data on demographic changes since 1950, utilizing databases from various United Nations agencies and the World Bank. The authors intentionally avoid discussing population forecasts, as the assumptions behind them merit separate consideration.
