This book explores the historical context of China's nationality issues, highlighting the cultural diversity and national unity shaped by the interactions of various ethnic groups throughout the country’s history. The five chapters detail the evolution of the Chinese Communist Party's (CPC) policies regarding nationalities. At the founding of the People's Republic of China (PRC), the Common Program, which functioned as an interim Constitution, was adopted by the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Congress, representing all societal sectors and nationalities. This program declared equal rights for all nationalities and established regional autonomy in areas where minority groups are concentrated. It emphasized the right of all nationalities to develop their languages, cultures, and customs, and required government support for the political, economic, cultural, and educational development of minority nationalities. The concluding section illustrates that the CPC's approach to nationality issues is dynamic, reflecting a continuous interplay of historical context, current challenges, and future considerations, serving as both a response and an ongoing inquiry.
