This book explores the background of China's nationality issues from the outset. Throughout its history, the various nationalities inhabiting Chinese territory have fostered a pattern of cultural diversity within national unity through interaction and integration. This pattern arises from China's vast geography and its rich tapestry of ancient human heritages and diverse cultural histories. The five chapters detail the evolution of the CPC's policies regarding nationalities. At the founding of the PRC, the Common Program, essentially an interim Constitution, was adopted by the Chinese People's Political Consultative Congress, representing all sectors of society and nationalities. It declared equal rights for all nationalities, mandated regional autonomy in areas with concentrated minority populations, and affirmed the right to develop native languages, cultures, and customs. Additionally, it required government support for the political, economic, cultural, and educational development of minority nationalities. The final section illustrates that the CPC's approach to nationality issues is dynamic, encompassing historical, current, and future perspectives, serving as an answer, a process, and a question.
