This study examines the healthy brains of domestic pigs post mortem, utilizing MRI scans in various orientations produced with a 1.0 Tesla scanner. A total of 12 sagittal, 13 dorsal, and 22 transverse scans were selected and labeled to create an MRI picture atlas of the porcine brain. Graphical software programs AMIRA® and AVIZO® enabled the identification of brain structures and the description of sulci in MRI images. These tools facilitated the construction of a three-dimensional model of the porcine brain, allowing for simultaneous identification of morphological features across different scan orientations. Additionally, MRI scans of a wild boar, a Wiesenauer minipig, and a babirusa were compared with those of domestic pigs. A key outcome is the discussion of the nomenclature for the sulci of the porcine cortex, which aids in correlating functional areas with MRI scans, addressing the absence of standardized nomenclature. The study highlights unique features of the porcine brain, noting it has fewer gyri than other ungulates and distinct anatomical relationships, such as the forebrain's position relative to the brain stem. It also identifies a physiological aplasia of the cerebellar cortex in the tuber region. The gyri and sulci system shows little variation among featured suidae, while differences in brain shape exist between brachycephalic and dolichocephalic breeds, with minimal surface structure differences.
