The striking paintings of Avery Singer challenge our visual expectations, defying easy classification as either painting or print. Her work prompts a critical examination of how digital information manifests as flat images on paper, in 3-D plastic, or on various surfaces. Influences from classic modernism and postmodern debates are evident, with the insignias of "fine arts" clashing with avant-garde elements. Parodic and autobiographical motifs reference art world clichés, while Singer adopts a humorous tone to explore rituals and social patterns surrounding artists, curators, collectors, and writers. This first monograph features a metaphoric analysis of Singer's work by Sven Loven, alongside Aram Moshayedi's insightful contextualization of her oeuvre. Contributions include a short story by Matthew Brannon about art school students and illustrations by Ebecho Muslimova, which further explore the theme of contemporary artistic life. Additionally, Singer presents an image essay that offers a subjective perspective on the overwhelming abundance of images, maintaining a subversive edge. This publication is part of the Kunsthalle Zürich series, in collaboration with the Fondazione Sandretto Re Rebaudengo, Turin.
