Proceedings from the International Conference on the German Diabrotica Research Program, held November 14-16, 2012, in Berlin, focus on the Western Corn Rootworm Diabrotica virgifera virgifera, a major corn pest introduced to Europe in 1992. This pest has significantly spread, particularly affecting corn-growing regions in Germany, including Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg, and Rhineland-Palatinate. While Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Saxony have detected individual specimens, the beetle has not yet established in those areas. Effective control measures are essential to mitigate its spread and protect long-term corn production. In response, an extensive research program was initiated in 2008 by the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection and the Bavarian State Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Forestry, with contributions from Baden-Württemberg. The proceedings compile research findings presented at the conference, covering various aspects such as the beetle's biology, the effectiveness and environmental compatibility of control measures, and the economic impacts. The knowledge gained from this research program offers scientific recommendations for necessary actions to contain and manage the Western Corn Rootworm effectively.
