An interdisciplinary research unit comprising 30 teams from natural, economic, and social sciences examined biodiversity and ecosystem services in a mountain rainforest ecosystem within the tropical Andes hotspot, focusing on past, present, and future environmental changes. The team evaluated ecosystem services through ecological field data, scenario-driven model experiments, and comparative field surveys of natural forests versus anthropogenic agricultural systems. Insights are provided on the effects of environmental change on service categories outlined in the Millennium Ecosystem Assessment (2005): cultural, regulating, supporting, and provisioning services. The analysis highlights biodiversity, including plant and animal trophic networks, and examines abiotic and biotic factors such as soils, climate, water, and nutrient cycles. Threats considered include land use, climate change, and atmospheric fertilization. The focus on regulating and provisioning services emphasizes water regulation and supply, climate regulation, and carbon sequestration. The synthesis offers science-based recommendations for sustainable land use, including forestry, pasture management, and indigenous practices. Finally, the authors detail their efforts to integrate local communities through capacity building aligned with the CBD-ABS (Convention on Biological Diversity - Access and Benefit Sharing), emphasizing education and knowledge transfer.
