Environmentally sustainable information management

En savoir plus sur le livre

This study aims to equip decision-makers and researchers with insights into the beneficial role of information systems (IS) and information technologies (IT) in combating climate change. While IT contributes to global environmental issues due to its significant resource and energy consumption, it also facilitates new IS that can address these challenges. The thesis offers theories and concepts that promote environmentally sustainable information management, serving as a foundation for further research. Environmental protection is framed within the broader sustainability concept, encompassing economic, ecological, and social dimensions. Although sustainability has been explored in general management, its application to IS remains under-researched. Utilizing resource-based view, stakeholder theory, and transaction cost theory, this work presents a procedural model for sustainable IS management. It highlights the potential of IT-enabled environmental initiatives, termed "Green IS." A survey involving 500 participants suggests that the market share for IT with green features could reach 26.6%. Findings indicate that marketing strategies should prioritize disposal attributes over energy attributes and target female consumers more than males. This underscores the market significance of environmentally sustainable IT.
