Four years since the first edition, this book has undergone significant revisions based on classroom application and user feedback. While maintaining its core concept of providing a concise yet rigorous mathematical treatment with a focus on computer applications to real datasets, the second edition introduces several enhancements. Notably, R is now included as an application tool, reflecting its status as a mature and widely used free software for statistical analysis. Chapter 3 features a new section on bootstrap estimation methods, which have become increasingly popular. Chapter 6 has been updated to offer a revised explanation of tree classifiers, incorporating the QUEST approach. Chapter 7 has seen improvements, including detailed discussions on multiple and partial correlation coefficients, enhanced coverage of ridge regression, and greater emphasis on model evaluation. Additionally, the book's CD now includes extra MATLAB functions and a set of R functions. Several chapters have been enriched with new examples and exercises, and the bibliography has been updated with new references.
