This fourth revision of M. J. Wynne’s “Checklist” is a comprehensive and updated compilation of benthic marine algae, or seaweeds, recognized in the tropical and subtropical Western Atlantic. It spans from the warm temperate eastern United States (Cape Hatteras, North Carolina) to southern Brazil, aligning with the 1960 algal flora published by W. R. Taylor. The checklist includes 1,553 species of benthic marine algae: 215 from Ochorophyta (Pelagophyceae, Phaeophyceae, and Xanthophyceae), 1,014 Rhodophyceae, and 324 Chlorophyceae. Including 175 infraspecific taxa, the total reaches 1,728 names, with taxonomic synonyms provided in brackets. Recent molecular-based phylogenetic studies have influenced classification and are reflected in the current system. There are 774 notes addressing nomenclatural issues, new records, and other relevant information. The publication features an extensive bibliography of literature primarily from after the third revision in 2011, along with a table of new references categorized by geographic region (countries or coastal states of the Southeastern USA). This checklist serves as a valuable resource for researchers on marine algae, offering a synthesis of recent literature and modern concepts in algal classification.
