Picture supported communication in Africa

En savoir plus sur le livre

A picture says more than a thousand words, but this holds true only in limited contexts focused on appearance. Generally, words serve as a more powerful and universal means of communication. The ideal blend of language and imagery surpasses the effectiveness of either alone, relevant in both literate and illiterate cultures. The potential of pictorial communication is often overestimated and underutilized. This work seeks to address that gap by offering a historical and universal perspective. It presents the European history of media to foster empathy with Africa's predominantly oral traditions. A significant chapter establishes the theoretical framework, systematically exploring the strengths and weaknesses of pictorial communication. This is followed by an examination of communication with illiterates through a functional, context-based lens, particularly in rural development programs in Africa. After laying this foundation, the author shares two case studies showcasing successful applications of pictorial communication in Africa. A critical evaluation and comparative analysis of these cases, alongside practical fundamentals, culminate in actionable recommendations. This revised and expanded edition is intended for both academics and development practitioners.
