Spolu s velkými romanisty Karlem Vosslerem, Ernstem Robertem Curtiem a Erichem Auerbachem byl představitelem polemické reakce na pozitivistickou filologii a průkopníkem metodologických postupů, které za jazykovými fakty dokážou zahlédnout tvůrčí individuum a jeho osobní styl, za osobním stylem dobovou stylovou tendenci a od ní pak dojít k panoramatickému pohledu na jednotlivé aspekty kulturních dějin.
In den für europäische Juden besonders bedrohlichen Monaten kurz vor dem Ausbruch des Zweiten Weltkriegs war Bolivien eines der weltweit wenigen Länder, die jüdische Flüchtlinge noch aufnahmen. Ein für die Vertriebenen nahezu unbekanntes Land, geprägt von geografischen und klimatischen Extremen, von großer kultureller Vielfalt und atemberaubender landschaftlicher Schönheit, das zwar Zuflucht bot, in dem sich jedoch die meisten Flüchtlinge lediglich als Durchreisende fühlten. Den ambivalenten Erfahrungen der Flucht und des Exils nähert sich Leo Spitzer auf berührende und facettenreiche Weise: Seine aus Wien und dem Burgenland stammende jüdische Familie kam 1939 in La Paz an und lebte beinahe zehn Jahre in Bolivien. Spitzer knüpft seine familiären Erlebnisse eng an die Geschichten anderer Flüchtlinge. Er zieht Memoiren, Briefe, Fotografien, Familienalben, künstlerische Darstellungen und Zeitungsartikel aus jener Zeit ebenso heran wie die Aufzeichnungen aus Gesprächen mit Zeitzeugen.
