Cette femme est une inconnue (nous apprendrons plus tard qu'elle est comédienne et a joué Mademoiselle Julie au théâtre), mais elle rappelle intensément au narrateur la jeune femme dont il a été très amoureux il y a une vingtaine d'années. Cette dernière s'appelait Magdalena, était aussi comédienne et elle aussi avait joué Strindberg. Après leur rupture, le narrateur a écrit un livre sur les trois années qu'ils ont vécu ensemble et il veut en donner les détails à l'inconnue de Stockholm. Lena accepte de l'écouter, mais se moque des similitudes qui lui semblent forcées entre sa vie et celle de Magdalena, invoquant à chaque détail troublant une coïncidence et ne cessant de répéter qu'elle ne peut être Magdalena puisqu'elle a vingt ans de moins.Ce récit de Peter Stamm, ciselé en 37 petits chapitres et dont le titre rappelle « la tendre indifférence du monde » évoquée par Camus à la fin de L'Étranger, est d'une vertigineuse intelligence.
