Nanoscience and nanotechnology for human health
    • Unique in combining the expertise of practitioners from university hospitals and that of academic researchers, this timely monograph presents selected topics catering specifically to the needs and interests of natural scientists and engineers as well as physicians who are concerned with developing nanotechnology-based treatments to improve human health. To this end, the book cover the materials aspects of nanomedicine, such as the hierarchical structure of biological materials, the imaging of hard and soft tissues and, in particular, concrete examples of nanotechnology-based approaches in modern medical treatments. The whole is rounded off by a discussion of the opportunities and risks of using nanotechnology and nanomaterials in medicine, backed by case studies taken from real life.

    • After the cemeteries at the south wall, problems of continuity, settlement finds and features, prehistory and natural environment [CPP 1-4], this volume presents graves excavated at Ödenkirche-Flur in 1883, 1913, 1948, and 1998-2000. They belong to the LBA [5 graves], the Keszthely Culture of the Avar period [112 of some 140 graves], and the LMA [157 graves]. Grave descriptions are followed by a discussion of burial rites as to orientation, grave construction, posture, multiple burial, and disturbance. Finds include coins, dress accessories such as hairpins, wreaths, combs, beads, earrings, brooches, pins, hooks, rings, belts, chains, and shoe ornaments, tools such as bags, knives, scissors, and needles, weapons such as spathae, seaxes, arrowheads, daggers, axes and vessels made of pottery or wood. All these allow a precise dating [A. D. 570-630] and the interpretation that Christians with a Romano-Germanic ancestry had immigrated from the northern Balkans or eastern Alps. The book ends with papers on the anthropology of the EMA [Mende, Kirinó] and LMA [Rendes, Tóth], beads of the EMA [Pásztor] and the archaeometry of precious metals in grave A [Bendo, Heinrich-Tamáska, Horváth].

      Die Gräberfelder von Keszthely-Fenékpuszta, Ödenkirche-Flur
    • Keszthely-Fenékpuszta, a site featuring late Roman fortifications from the 4th century, is a crucial location in Pannonia for research on late antiquity continuity, particularly due to its cemeteries. Excavations since 1885, especially in the latter half of the 20th century, uncovered seven cemeteries with a total of 1099 graves dating from the 4th to the 9th century. Cemeteries I-III were in use from around 350-450, while cemetery IV extended into the late 5th/early 6th century, though the lack of grave goods complicates conclusions about its timeline. Cemetery V corresponds to the Keszthely Culture of the Early Avar Period, influenced by Roman traditions [2nd half of the 6th to late 7th century], cemetery VI belongs to the Carolingian Period [circa 850-900], and cemetery VII is dated to the mid-5th century. The volume opens with a comprehensive catalogue of graves organized by excavation years. The analysis covers topography, burial practices [orientation, construction, unique features], deposition methods [postures, coffins, multiple burials, absence of goods], disturbances, remnants of funeral meals and offerings, and a detailed examination of archaeological finds [coins, dress items, boxes, weapons, tools, pottery, wooden buckets, glass vessels]. The concluding section presents the dating and interpretation of the cemeteries.
