Keszthely-Fenékpuszta, a site featuring late Roman fortifications from the 4th century, is a crucial location in Pannonia for research on late antiquity continuity, particularly due to its cemeteries. Excavations since 1885, especially in the latter half of the 20th century, uncovered seven cemeteries with a total of 1099 graves dating from the 4th to the 9th century. Cemeteries I-III were in use from around 350-450, while cemetery IV extended into the late 5th/early 6th century, though the lack of grave goods complicates conclusions about its timeline. Cemetery V corresponds to the Keszthely Culture of the Early Avar Period, influenced by Roman traditions [2nd half of the 6th to late 7th century], cemetery VI belongs to the Carolingian Period [circa 850-900], and cemetery VII is dated to the mid-5th century. The volume opens with a comprehensive catalogue of graves organized by excavation years. The analysis covers topography, burial practices [orientation, construction, unique features], deposition methods [postures, coffins, multiple burials, absence of goods], disturbances, remnants of funeral meals and offerings, and a detailed examination of archaeological finds [coins, dress items, boxes, weapons, tools, pottery, wooden buckets, glass vessels]. The concluding section presents the dating and interpretation of the cemeteries.
