Aujourd'hui, il est rappelé pour ses carnets publiés à titre posthume, qu'il appelait "livres de rebut", et pour sa découverte d'étranges motifs arborescents désormais connus sous le nom de figures de Lichtenberg.

Lichtenberg (1742-1799) seuls ont été traduits, en 1797, les Commentaires sur les gravures de Hogarth, jamais réédités jusqu'à aujourd'hui. Le présent ouvrage propose au lecteur deux chapitres de cette belle traduction, enrichis d'illustrations accompagnant le texte (ici donné dans l'orthographe de l'époque)
