PLACEMAKER is the third in a series of four PLACE studios conducted at ADIP the Architecture Design Innovation Program at the TU Berlin. PLACEMAKER investigats non-places – places of transience that do not hold enough significance to be regarded as places. An architectural object that is placed into a non-place environment must have the ability to create a field of transition and subsequently become an actual destination. Its architectural design and its hybrid-public as well as internal program must become an attraction in order for the original non-place to become a new place. The non-place environment of investigation for this studio was Berlin’s intercity highway - the A100 Stadtautobahn. Four sites were selected based on the diversity of their context and the evident discontinuation of the city fabric inflicted by the highway.

‘Place Activator’ is the second in a series of four studios led by Guest Professor Boštjan Vuga at TU Berlin’s Architecture Design Innovation Program (ADIP). This magazine introduces the situation in Trieste and outlines strategies to address stagnation. It emphasizes the catalytic power of individual architectural objects that can transform the broader urban landscape. Trieste, an aging city with minimal urban change over decades, is culturally rich, situated at the crossroads of Latin, Germanic, and Slavic influences, and features unique micro-ambiences. However, its development is hindered by the seaport, which dominates the coastline and isolates the city from the sea. The studio proposes seven architectural objects at key locations within the old and new seaport, designed to open up the area and reconnect the city with the waterfront. By incorporating 'porosity' as an architectural principle, these designs aim to create volumetrically and organizationally porous structures that offer inviting spatial sequences, ultimately fostering Trieste's urban development.
ADIP, the chair for Architecture Design and Innovation, is a laboratory for new ideas and changing input, run by guest professors at the Institute for Architecture at the Technische Universität Berlin. In 2011, ADIP welcomed Bostjan Vuga, founding partner of the architectural office SADAR+VUGA in Ljubljana, Slovenia. PLACEHOLDERS are forecasters of the future object at the select location. They are areas for socializing, games, new experiences and showrooms for main public activities in the future object. Placeholders encourage cooperation and interaction between their visitors and users. 13 future construction sites are chosen, 13 urban spots in Berlin where a new construction is not only planned, but already defined with an architectural project. It is shown how a design of 13 pavilions influences the way we see ourselves and how we interact with others today.
