Amant, gâte-sauce, évêque ou époux, jamais le héros ne parviendra à échapper à leur emprise...

Octogénaire, Günter Grass fait parler ses huit enfants, nés de quatre mères différentes, qui évoquent les souvenirs d'une enfance marquée par la figure de leur " petit père ". Au cœur de ces réminiscences, l'Agfa Box, un appareil photo aux pouvoirs surnaturels depuis qu'il a échappé aux flammes d'un bombardement : en plus de témoigner du passé, ses clichés annoncent l'avenir, et parfois même transfigurent des scènes banales en rêves enfouis.

Günter Grass revisite notre siècle finissant, en cent textes brefs évoquant chacun une année. Cette série de croquis ne prétend pas constituer une grande fresque ni retracer même sommairement l'histoire, pourtant constamment présente. Grass choisit pour chaque année un événement petit ou grand, mais bien daté, et un narrateur différent qui, sur le moment ou longtemps après, l'évoque avec sa voix propre, dans sa perspective et son langage. Cette centaine de personnages des deux sexes, de tous âges et de toutes conditions sociales, constitue comme une petite " comédie humaine " où le romancier peut faire briller les innombrables facettes de son talent. Quelquefois, le narrateur n'est autre qu'un certain Günter Grass évoquant un souvenir personnel, mais il est seulement l'un des innombrables acteurs et spectateurs plus ou moins obscurs que ce siècle a brassés, secoués, écrasés. Tous ont droit, de la part de l'auteur, au même chatoyant mélange de pitié et de hargne, d'humour et de satire, de truculence et de poésie, qui a fait de Grass l'un des écrivains du siècle.

Pour souligner le vingtième anniversaire du Groupe 47, un rassemblement d'écrivains allemands (Peter Weiss, Heinrich Böll, Günter Grass, etc.) venus d'horizons divers, mais tous bien décidés à assurer "le renouveau allemand par la reconquête d'une langue", l'auteur a écrit ce roman qui se déroule au milieu du XVIIe siècle et dont le personnage principal est bien entendu la langue. Un groupe de poètes faméliques se rassemblent dans une auberge borgne pour déclarer la guerre à la mélancolie, aux dialectes et aux sabirs. Verve, finesse, érudition et aimable paillardise. Dans le contexte québécois l'oeuvre prend un relief particulier.
