    David Ryan ist der Entwickler von ELOPe, einem Programm zur Sprachoptimierung von Emails, das im Falle eines Erfolges ein Karrieresprungbrett für ihn sein könnte. Als sein Projekt plötzlich Gefahr läuft, eingestellt zu werden, fügt David seinem Programm eine verborgene Direktive hinzu, die unabsichtlich zur Entstehung einer künstlichen Intelligenz führt. David und sein Team sind zunächst begeistert, als ihrem Projekt bald zusätzliche Server und Programmierer zur Verfügung gestellt werden.
