    Just after the Second World War, in the small English village of Chawton, an unusual but like-minded group of people band together to attempt something remarkable. Grace Perkinsová je vdaná žena se dvěma syny, jež v knihkupectví pracuje proto, aby finančně přilepšila své rodině, která na tom po psychickém zhroucení jejího manžela není po válce nijak valně. Evie Stoneová je jedna z prvních žen, kterým bylo umožněno vystudovat Cambridge. Nebyla přijata na akademický post proto, že byl upřednostněn její méně schopný spolužák a zároveň rival.
