En savoir plus sur le livre

Caring for your aging parent—and yourself—can be challenging, as highlighted by Jane Gross. The role reversal between parent and child can be painful; remember it may be even harder for your parent, so treat them with dignity. Avoid hospitals and emergency rooms, as well as moving between home, assisted living, and nursing homes, as these transitions can significantly harm their physical and cognitive health. Reject the notion that placing a parent in a nursing home is a failure; quality nursing home care can often be better than the limited support in assisted living or the isolation of home care. Each state has its own laws and eligibility standards affecting the elderly, including Medicare qualifications, so be aware that rules may change if your parents relocate. Many doctors may not accept new Medicare patients, which is crucial if a parent moves far away to be near family. An adult child with power of attorney can use a parent's funds for legitimate expenses, which may expedite their eligibility for Medicaid. Thus, covering rent, groceries, or personal care costs may not be in your parent's best financial interest if they are likely to deplete their resources.
