1904. English novelist who was secretary to Dante Gabriel Rossetti, he lived with him until the poet's death and then wrote Recollections of Rossetti. His enormously popular novels, some of Manx life, others on biblical themes, include The Shadow of a Crime, The Deemster, The Manxman, The Christian, The Prodigal Son, and The Master of Man. The novel begins: Iceland had never looked more wonderful.
