Fifteen-year-old Nat's parents brought him to the Redwood logging camp when he was a small child. After his father and then his mother died, the boy earned his keep by washing an endless stream of dishes in the camp kitchen. Nat has two conflicting dreams: to get a formal education and to become a logger like his heroes. The first step is to get the job of "whistlepunk," relaying signals from the overseer to the men controlling the log-moving machinery. But Nat's kitchen duties, his trap-lines, and his pet raccoon Micky fill his waking hours. Besides, strangers have been prowling around the camp at night, possibly the ones who have been robbing other logging outfits in the region. It will take all of Nat's ingenuity to solve this mystery and help him fulfil at least one of his dreams.
