Sometimes safety and sacrifice are exactly the same. After growing up homeless and hungry, Drake went into the military and from there into one of the most dangerous and highly-paid jobs with one goal: save a nest-egg so that for the rest of his life, he'd never be homeless again. He saves every penny he can (well, and he sends fifteen hundred a month home to his mother) and works as an underwater welder on an oil rig. He's single because there's no way to take someone else along for the ride, not in a life like he's living.
