The story follows Juan Crisostomo Ibarra, who returns to the Philippines as Simoun, a wealthy jeweler with a vengeful agenda. Disillusioned and cynical, he seeks to incite a revolution against the oppressive Spanish colonial government. By infiltrating Manila's elite and manipulating the Captain-General, Simoun encourages the upper classes to exploit the masses, ultimately aiming to provoke a revolt.
