'Way-making [dao] gives them life and nurtures them, rears and develops them.' This is the promise of nature as expressed in the notion of dao in the Daodejing. Bringing nature's specialized and powerful system of learning to children in our education is the goal of this book. The Dao of Teaching is a guide for teachers to design lessons for student learning with nature. It provides an outline of the core concepts of the Daoist philosophy that are essential for teaching lessons and then gives practical lesson examples to assist teachers in applying them. The basic 3-step lesson and five variation lessons in the chapters are guides for teachers to consider the dao lessons in different circumstances. The examples show that changing a regular lesson to a dao lesson needs only a few alterations, but these few can make a difference in the character of the learning.
