While the rest of Europe was preoccupied by a wave of revolutions in 1848, Britain was fighting a full-scale campaign against the stubborn resistance of the Sikh people of north-west India to resist absorption into the British Raj. Written soon after the event, this is the first full account of a campaign which saw the pitched battles of Ramnugger, Chilllianwallah and Goojerat.
