If you've ever loved a cat these stories are for you. Not the usual 'pet' story, Scamper is really a memoir of the author's relationships with three of the cats in her life. The first, "Love Story", chronicles the story of Pippin, a cat the author did not want. The second, "Scamper" is told from the perspective of the cat and is about the journey from Los Angeles to the author's present home on the Olympic Peninsula following the death of the author's son. In the third story, "Don't Fence Me In", the author describes her efforts to ensure the safety of her present cat Spirit, whose independence of mind makes the job of containing her difficult. These are not 'pet' stories in the usual meaning of the word. Rather they describe the relationships that existed between the author and the cats who have shared her life. In the telling we discover, as the author does, that the animals we love, and who love us, far from being peripheral to our lives, may be at the center of what makes life meaningful and good. “Other Stories for Grown Ups” are short, deceptively simple essays in which the author examines aspects of her new life in a small, rural community. In “The Cows” for example, the author explores a moral dilemma which forces her to confront her own hypocrisy. Scamper A Cat is not just easy reading, it is reading that provides the reader with evocative material for personal insight and understanding.
