The story follows Henry Flemming, who, dissatisfied with his comfortable life, trades his successful brokerage for a career as a detective. His first case spirals into chaos when his living room fills with dead bodies, much to the dismay of his wife, Karen, and their eccentric neighbors, Suzy and Stan. The situation worsens when one of the corpses is revealed to be Karen's father. Despite returning home battered and disheveled, Henry finds unexpected joy in his new, tumultuous life.
