Margaret Oliphant Wilson's life was marked by both literary success and profound personal tragedy. After publishing her first novel in 1849, she married her cousin and had six children, three of whom died in infancy. Following her husband's death from tuberculosis, she returned to England and supported her remaining children through her writing. Despite a prolific career spanning over thirty years, she faced further heartbreak with the loss of her daughter and two sons. Oliphant passed away in 1897, leaving behind a legacy of resilience amidst sorrow.
