The clarinet concerto premiered in 1997 during the 'Year of Ninian' celebrations, honoring Ninian of Whithorn, the first bishop of the area and a key figure in the establishment of Christianity in Scotland. Ninian is believed to have arrived in Galloway in 397, predating the Irish missionary Columban, who is recognized as one of the "Twelve Apostles of Ireland." The work reflects this historical and spiritual significance, connecting music with Scotland's early Christian heritage.
