Born into a literary family in Dublin, Joseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was a prolific writer known for his gothic horror stories that often reflect themes of nostalgia for Ireland's dispossessed Catholic aristocracy. Educated at home while studying law at Trinity College, he published his first story at 24. His works, including classics like "The Cock and Anchor" and "In a Glass Darkly," explore psychological terror rather than external horrors. Following personal tragedy, his writing deepened, solidifying his status as a key figure in 19th-century supernatural literature before his death in 1873.
