Set in 18th century Lima, Peru, this comic opera follows the struggles of street singers La Perichole and Piquillo. Their fortunes change when the Viceroy invites them to perform at a royal banquet, leading to La Perichole being courted by the wealthy Don Andres. Torn between love and ambition, she initially considers becoming his mistress for a better life. However, the Viceroy intervenes, ultimately facilitating their marriage. The opera is celebrated for its vibrant music and sharp satire on social class and corruption.
