In June 1988, leaders from Algeria, Libya, Mauritania, Morocco, and Tunisia convened in Algiers to discuss the formation of the Arab Maghreb Union (AMU), officially established in February 1989 in Marrakech. The AMU aims to foster cooperation among member states by coordinating policies for sustainable development across various sectors. Key objectives include strengthening regional ties, promoting societal prosperity, ensuring justice and peace, and gradually facilitating the free movement of people, goods, and services among member nations.
