The story centers on an aging king who, seeking to retire, divides his kingdom among his three daughters based on their declarations of love. The eldest two, Goneril and Regan, flatter him excessively, while the youngest, Cordelia, speaks truthfully and is disowned. As Lear descends into madness due to betrayal, he ultimately reconciles with Cordelia before tragedy befalls them both.
