The book highlights the archaeological contributions of Matos Mendieta, who focused on the Upper Mantaro and Tarma drainages in Peru during the 1960s and 1970s. His work, part of the Proyecto Andino de Estudios Arqueológicos with the Smithsonian Institution, involved reconnaissance and excavations that advanced the understanding of the region's history. Mendieta's collaborations with American archaeologists, including Craig Morris and David Browman, played a crucial role in the exploration of Inka provincial centers and systematic surveys in highland Peru.
