Theodor Fontane's work encompasses a comprehensive exploration of the Mark Brandenburg region, presented in a single volume that includes five distinct parts: The Grafschaft Ruppin, Das Oderland, Havelland, Spreeland, and Funf Schlosser. Each section reflects years of meticulous observation and literary refinement, with the earliest, The Grafschaft Ruppin, originating between 1859 and 1861 and first published in 1862. Subsequent parts were developed over the years, with Das Oderland (1860-1863) published in 1863, Havelland (1863-1872) in 1873, and Spreeland (1859-1881) in 1882. Funf Schlosser, the final section, was created between 1880 and 1888 and saw its first edition in 1889. The present edition is a new release, formatted in a large size with a two-column layout, and is edited by Karl-Maria Guth. The text is based on the well-regarded editions of Fontane's complete works, edited by a team of scholars, ensuring a faithful representation of the author's original prose.
