In Phnom Penh, 1973, a cosmopolitan society of diplomats, refugees, and journalists thrives. Among them are two men driven by a passion for truth: Schanberg, a war correspondent for the New York Times, and Dith Pran, a calm and determined Cambodian. Two years later, the Khmer Rouge triumphantly enter the defenseless city. The American embassy evacuates in a panic as brutal repression takes hold and hatred rises to power. Undeterred by danger, Schanberg and Pran are committed to witnessing the unfolding tragedy until the last moment. While foreigners are evacuated, Pran is imprisoned. In Pol Pot's camps, the young Cambodian faces his own descent into hell, confronting betrayal, famine, massacres, and child killers. Yet Pran belongs to the resilient few who survive.
