En savoir plus sur le livre

This work explores the contributions of queer and transgender artists to country and Americana music, often overlooked by the mainstream. Blending ethnographic research with historical analysis, it offers a comprehensive study of these musicians and their impact. Shana Goldin-Perschbacher examines the careers of notable lesbian artists like k.d. lang and Amy Ray, alongside the surprising success of Patrick Haggerty, who gained recognition decades after releasing the first out gay country album. The book also highlights contemporary figures such as nonbinary musician Rae Spoon, drag queen Trixie Mattel, and breakthrough artists like Orville Peck, Amythyst Kiah, and Grammy winner Lil Nas X. Many of these musicians boldly place their gender and sexuality at the forefront, complicating their careers but ultimately expanding the audience for country and Americana music. Their efforts have cultivated new connections with listeners eager to engage with their diverse identities and music. This detailed study reinterprets the genre through the lives of artists historically marginalized within its narrative. The publication is supported by various grants, including the AMS 75 PAYS Fund and the National Endowment for the Humanities. Goldin-Perschbacher is an assistant professor of music studies at Temple University.
