En savoir plus sur le livre

On a summer night in 415 BCE, unknown individuals mutilated most of the domestic "herms"—guardian statues of Hermes—in Athens. The immediate reaction was one of fear, as Athenians suspected a conspiracy against the city, its fleet, and democracy itself. In response, a board of investigators was established, leading to informants, accusations, and the flight of many accused individuals. Ultimately, dozens faced exile or execution, with their properties confiscated. This dramatic period allows for an in-depth observation of Athens in crisis, revealing the workings of major institutions such as the assembly, council, law courts, and theater, alongside public and private religion. Notably, primary sources from these tumultuous months identify conspirators from various status groups, including citizens, women, slaves, and free residents, providing a multifaceted view of Athenian society in the late fifth century. Designed for classroom use, this work is not a simplified history but a source-based exploration of ancient urban life, ideal for studying the people, institutions, and beliefs of Athens. Original texts, translated by poet Robert B. Hardy, are accompanied by insightful discussions and analyses by Clara Shaw Hardy, creating an engaging narrative that immerses students in the crisis of Athens.
