The Political Economy of the Special Relationship

En savoir plus sur le livre

The rise of global finance in the latter half of the twentieth century is often viewed as a chapter in the story of postwar U.S. growth. However, this perspective is challenged by an exploration of the Anglo-American origins of financial globalization, highlighting Britain's significant yet often overlooked role in reshaping international capitalism alongside the U.S. Through new archival research, the conventional narrative of international economic history as a series of hegemonic transitions is questioned. Instead, the focus is on the longstanding interactions between private and public financial institutions in both countries, particularly the connections among their financial markets, central banks, and fiscal policies. It is revealed that America's post-WWII financial dominance was both facilitated and constrained by British capitalism, necessitating collaboration with British politicians, officials, and bankers to realize a liberal economic order. This transatlantic integration and competition fueled the growth of the financial sector, increased reliance on debt, global regulatory easing, the rise of monetarism, and the shift toward neoliberalism. From the gold standard to the recent global financial crisis, this examination recasts the history of global finance through the lens of Anglo-American development.
