Some events are simply unforgettable; of the fact that Solidarity falls into this category there can be no question. Solidarity brought with it the realisation of a dream shared by many, not only within Poland but also well beyond its borders - in places afflicted by authoritarianism, as well as those where democracy seemed to be functioning largely as it should.
