Peter L. Shillingsburg wykładał na Mississippi State University (uhonorowany tytułem William L. Giles Professor), na University of North Texas, na De Montfort University (był tam dyrektorem Center for Textual Scholarship), na Defense Force Academy pod auspicjami The University of New South Wales oraz na Loyola University w Chicago, gdzie kierował katedrą badań tekstowych (Martin J.
