En savoir plus sur le livre

In a world inspired by Hungarian history and Jewish mythology, a young pagan woman and a one-eyed captain of the Woodsmen forge an unlikely alliance to confront tyranny. Évike, the only woman in her forest village without powers, is seen as an outcast due to her father's Yehuli lineage, which is despised by the villagers. When soldiers from the Holy Order of Woodsmen arrive to claim a pagan girl for a blood sacrifice, Évike is betrayed by her community. However, a monstrous attack leaves her and the cold, one-eyed captain, Gáspár Bárány, as the sole survivors. Gáspár, a disgraced prince, understands Évike's alienation; he fears his cruel brother’s ambition to seize the throne and unleash violence against pagans and Yehuli alike. Together, they form a fragile pact to stop him, journeying from the harsh northern tundra to the smog-filled capital. As they navigate their mission, their initial animosity gives way to a deeper connection, rooted in shared experiences of oppression. Yet, trust is precarious, and as Évike reconnects with her estranged father and uncovers her hidden magic, both must confront their loyalties and the sacrifices they are willing to make for a nation that has never embraced them.
