En savoir plus sur le livre

Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) is generally regarded as the founder of pragmatism, North America¿s most influential philosophical movement. Peirce is also well-known for his theory of signs and with Saussure was a founding figure of "semiotics". Albert Atkin introduces the full spectrum of Peirce¿s thought for those coming to his work for the first time. The book begins with an overview of Peirce¿s life and work, considering his early and long-standing interest in logic. Atkin then explains Peirce¿s pragmatism and his pragmatic account of truth, placing it in the context of his broader views of belief, doubt and the process of scientific enquiry. He then introduces Peirce¿s accounts of semiotics, logic and metaphysics, the least understood aspect of Peirce¿s philosophy. The final chapter considers Peirce¿s legacy and his influence on the thought of philosophers such as John Dewey and Richard Rorty and on areas outside philosophy such as linguistics and mathematics. Additional features include chapter summaries and a glossary.
