Russian author Boris Akunin delights in literary experimentation. Varya's quest to clear his name leads her to collaborate with Fandorin, despite her initial disdain for him. The narrative explores themes of Turkish politics, female suffrage, and the harem system, while Varya investigates a suspicious colonel in Bucharest, becoming embroiled in a deadly duel. As officers are murdered and a British plot against Russia emerges, Akunin captures the chaotic atmosphere of 19th-century warfare with clever dialogue and a strong female lead. However, the story's numerous digressions and minor characters may cause readers' interest to wane before reaching the climax.
